Get to Know The Cover Bridge Inn

About Us & What You Can Expect

The Cover Bridge Inn is a traditional Yorkshire Dales inn, recently taken over by Stephen and Milly Bennett, where a warm welcome has always been at the heart of what we do. Whether you are calling in for a drink, joining us for a meal or staying overnight, we aim to provide a relaxed and comfortable place to pause during your visit to Wensleydale.

We are proud to be a stop for walkers, cyclists, anglers and travellers passing through the area, offering simple hospitality, good food and a friendly atmosphere throughout the year.

Our History

Welcoming travellers and visitors for generations

The Cover Bridge Inn has welcomed travellers for centuries, originally serving those journeying through Wensleydale along the old routes that crossed the River Ure nearby. Built as a traditional coaching inn, it became a familiar resting place for people moving between the market towns and across the Dales.

Over time the inn has changed hands and names, but its purpose has remained much the same a place to pause, refresh and enjoy simple hospitality. Many of the building’s character features still remain, giving a sense of the long history that continues today.

Delicious Sunday roast We were given this from a recommendation from the Three Horse Shoes pub (who had stopped serving food when we arrived - and suggested we come here as they serve food all day). I am so glad we came by this pub, it was a quaint little pub full of locals eating their Sunday roasts and having a pint. We had the most delicious Sunday roast - the best that I’ve had in a long time and which beats anything I’ve had in London in a while! It was so tasty, and so much food ! Such a great find. The staff were friendly too ! Thank you!

Very average Very average. The location is nice, next to the River Cover but the noise from the road is most off-putting if you are in the garden: it’s a popular motorcycle run to the Dales so is loud.. The food is definitely average. Chicken burger with dry, burnt chicken and heavily salted chips; fish sandwich with dry, chewy fish. Not particularly pleasant. There are better places to eat in the very local area.

Attention to good cooking What a pleasant and delicious surprise this place is. Tucked away like a treasure at the bottom of a jewellery box that you find by a lucky accident. We stayed 2 nights here and both evenings had outstanding meals, a lunch and hearty breakfasts. The food is hones, flavourful and uncomplicated, which for us are the signs of a chef who knows what they're doing. The staff are lovely and helpful serving a very nice selection of local ales and ciders. We stayed during the week so we didn't need the provided earplugs that were kindly put on the bedstand.

Amazing homemade food We called in after a day in Hawes,we haven't been for a while and wanted to see if it was as good as I remembered. As it was a nice evening we ordered in the bar and went and sat in the beer garden overlookimg the river.I ordered gammon and eggs a dish this pub is renowned for and my wife ordered lasagne,I also got a side order of onion rings with 2 drinks a pint of the very good semerwater pale ale and 1/2 pint of lager all for just over £40 which was excellent value for money for the quality and quantity of food received. My plate came with chips and peas with 2 slabs of gammon over the top, make sure you bring a good appetite you'll need it.My gammon was very well cooked and the chips were lovely, crispy and homemade the side order if onion rings were well cooked too.My wife's lasagna looked lovely and she said it was very tasty ,she ate the lot.The homemade elements of the meal added to the quality too I would highly recommend but don't expect silver service it's a proper Yorkshire pub

Welcoming, incredible service and food What a gorgeous, welcoming pub/restaurant this is! Recommend by East Witton Shepard’s hut whereby it has absolutely lived up to its positive reputation! Alf could not have done enough for us, checking and refilling our drinks with the most attentive and kind service, thank you so much! Will travel 3 hours for this again anyday!!

Guiness 🤝🏼 Scotch Eggs One of the most fantastic meals I've ever had. Staff where amazing, big shout out to Alf for their impecible hospitality. If I can recommend anything, (and if you're lucky enough for it to still be on the specials) the venison and chorizo scotch eggs are to die for. The Guiness is also brilliant. (See reciept for proof!)

Great beers and atmosphere Outstanding beers atmosphere and value. We were there when previous reviewers Isabella & Richard L were complaining on New Year's Eve. Their opinion is not ours (& everyone else in the bar btw who sat and watched her bemoan a pheasant burger meal which she ate and then asked for a refund on) - this the polar opposite of our opinion. Thought the owner dealt with her professionally and politely. Enjoyed Timothy Taylors Landlord, local cider (one of 7 cask pumps) and some great food. Recommended 👍
